Another great conversation. Thanks for these. Hope you find these notes helpful. 6:30 - Well sure, if you reduce (flatten) the world to propositions (John Vervaeke's Propositional tyranny) and ignore all the incorrect logic (symmetrical inference, btw) then sure, Derrida is correct. Ultimately this is a sign that his intellect is very weak, his logic basic and his facts are incorrect. Which does beg the question, given those observable facts, why does anyone listen to anything he has to say? Why does anyone think he's 'smart' or has anything useful to say? 9:00 - It isn't only divisive, it can only ever be divisive. There cannot be hierarchy if we cannot agree on things that object to both of us that we agree on. So it's a change in the definition of 'objective', along with a relativism. This will always lead to narcissism because it says there are only personal private perspectives, none of which can make a claim to anything outside the ego. This is the begining of toxic individualism. There is no good in Post Modernism, it cannot be redeemed (nor should it). 23:00 - So the idea of Top Down Power from Above is a common theme in European philosophy. So no definition of power, just a statement of constraints that prevent the personal private perspective from manifesting their idea of how the world works. 25:40 - Materialism alone doesn't explain Marx, it also has to NOT MOVE, in other words, you need to compress time, or eliminate it, in order to make anything Marx says make sense at all. Otherwise it's all observably wrong. Sure, the Frankfurt school comes along and gets it wrong in the other direction. 30:50 - So an intellectual, who believes he has more 'knowledge' thinks knowledge and power are the same. Shocking. Not at all psychological projection or wishful thinking. 32:00 - Power remains undefined again - but the only way to know about power is oppressor and oppressed. So that is how you infer power, even though it's only knowledge. Obvious contradiction. 33:15 - A completely circular definition of truth! Excellent, how helpful. All flat world thinking done by men of small intellect indeed. Sounds like he agrees with Derrida in that sense, at least, that definitions are all relative to one another (an impossible coniditon since you ignore starting state) and 'systems' is the new 'relative'. That is 'new' in a way, but not really. Again, these crazy self reference (hint, all self reference is wrong) not only requires a flat world, but ignores time and change. Truth as power while power determines truth, therefore it's a circular definition with no begining and no end. There is no way this doesn't devolve immediately into preferencing your ego (because personal private perspective) which is narcassism. All the while the author is telling you this as an authority. It's very sneaky. Also, creates the whole 'opponent processing' lie, which is nothing but destructive. It should be cooperative processing, because that is how it works in the eye, in our brains, as we think, etc. I wish there were more attention to this fact. 51:20 - Why it is that people, especially smart people, miss the contradiction? That is a fascinating topic. It seems as though the higher your IQ, the more easily you are fooled by this trick. 54:00 - Notice that the narcassists like Derrida just don't see their own error. Other Narcassists say 'cool game' and play along. 55:40 - Tear down our rationalist tradition? Far worse, just playing God, trying to remake the work to their will, irrespective of any other factors. As the 'author' they take the God's eye view. The material cannot be used for good. I think the idea that people do things for rational reasons, like 'logic, reason and rationality won't give us what we want' is wrong. People mimic patterns in the world. If those patterns happen to be able to enable their dreams, they prefer those patterns. This looks backwards from the outside - a common confusion. Academics that quote without attribution. How unusual. Or a good tell for bad people whose 'philosophies' should be ignored.

I've heard that back in ancient Greece, multiple philosophers scorned their students for writing things down because they thought it was detrimental to their memories. They thought people should train their memories to remember instead of writing. I guess we're at another point like that! Imagine if no one chose to write; maybe we'd have forgotten things, but maybe we'd all have better memories.

I find it interesting all the men who signed the Declaration of Sentiments. I'm sure each person had his own reason for doing so, but I see this also in the Woke movement. I worked at a college in California and so many caucasian administrators and faculty wholeheartedly took on the Racist moniker as described in the Ibrahim X Kendi book. As if accepting their guilt as describe in the book expunged them from the sins of their ancestors. In fact the caucasians were more militant and dogmatic than their peers of different color and race.

I normally don't leave comments, but I just wanted to say that as a young man who is now converting to christianity, I've never clicked on a video faster. Jonathan's videos opened the door for me to come to Christ. And Tammy, more than anyone else, seeing how you and Jordan Peterson conduct yourselves has shown me that healthy relationships are possible, and as someone who came from a very broken home, it's given me something to strive towards being a part of in the future. Thank you both for the inspiration, it's helped me greatly.

I happened across this interview after listening to Coleman's interview with Mary Harrington and feeling aligned with her perspective, appreciating the intelligent way of expressing it. But I was even more impressed with this interview. Tammy Peterson has a Feminine silent presence that I admire. Yet when she speaks, a beautiful voice shares worlds of wisdom. I'll certainly be following. Her last paragraph was on target. Many thanks.

Reminds me of my firstborn in 1998. He got misidentified in an incident in 2nd grade. He was so upset that he fled the school and ran all the way home. They then placed him in some group therapy with naughty/disruptive children. Someone recently said to me, "Oh my gosh, the 'othered' him!!" I should have pulled him out then. He stayed 4 years and begged me to let him stay home after the first day of 6th grade.

Love this conversation, really like Stephen Hicks. Some general comments I hope you find helpful. These are more general so I didn't use timestampes. I find that capitalism has nothing to do with voting, but everything to do with access to capital (hint is in the name). I would argue that the philosophical thought around things like voting is a misapprehension and came much later. The cold war talk came later as the result of the split in socialism into communist and fascist (honest socialism). So this is odd framing. The reason why economics comes up is because materialists measure things, it's not a function of Marxism directly, it's just a second order effect from the same cause as Marxism. A lot of this is just the flattening of the world. Treating components (no such thing as individuals) as wholes (collectives) is a problem, because we don't want to admit different rules need exist at different scales. The mediation of large groups of non-familial groups is called 'government' (in all cases). The denial of government because 'tyranny' is the problem being solved here through reduction of the world to a single set of rules for all cases. This is always a single, personal, private perspective, which is where all the confusion comes in. There is no difference between 'Grecco Roman' tradition and 'Judeo Christian' tradition. Plato's Republic ends with a tale about a ressurection. Rome admired Greece greatly and took many things (as they did with every culture they encourted) from them. In so far as 'philosophy' exists, in the case of Rome and Greece, explicitly, it ran right into Christianity. You could argued it morphed into it. In either case, the idea that those are different from OUR perspective is a bit odd, since Christianity conquered both regions before we came along....so.... The government side of 'rights' is not a religious argument and it's based on the Greek and Roman (western) canon, but it spurred by the beheading of the English king, which is far more important in crafting the government in the US. This story about 'modern' is quite compelling, but impossible. There are a lot of assumptions about what people knew and how that impacted them works. This is an Age of Gnosis, knowledge as highest value and prime mover story. People aren't usually moved by knowledge and arguments, they use that to justify their desires instead. Notice that Dr. Hicks tells the story as if it unfolded with rationality and knowledge first, but then tells the story of us prioritizing that after the initial push. This is poor ordering (and extremely common in the knowledge first crowd). It is a super compelling story, because it hangs together quite well, until you sequence it in time and space. It is worth noting that the science crowd loves the 'modern' approach, with rationality at the helm and individuals able to 'work things out' because they believe they have better rationality. Therefore the 'power' is (or should be) with them. When that doesn't work out, they accept the post modern ideas rather than resist them. Also of note is the heavy hindsight bias in these stories told by both Dr. Hicks and all 'modern' philosophers. One trick the post moderns play is in their use of the word 'power' (undefined , but often described as top down control thorugh force or threat of force) and how it becomes a nice short cut for 'ability to change the thing you want'. When you want the highest value to be climate, because that is what you worship, you must destroy other forms of value (art). Or replace it. Or both. This is a very common historical pattern. Defacing things is not necessarily anti-indivudalism, it could be just equality doctrine, if we are all equal, why should we take any single individual face and advertise it? Or show it to others? Or have it available when every other face is not? That isn't exactly a denial of individualism. Equality doctrine looks like lots of other things, be careful the story someone is telling. Oh, I can agree that putting a unirnal into a musem is nihlistic ultimately, but long before that it is critique as such. It's a statement about something, which might not be what you think. It also may send messages that the person who did it was not intending. Chaos breeds chaos, so a small, simple, basic, correct critique will most often lead to nihilism, that doens't mean it is or was intended to be nihilistic, this is where we get into trouble, cause and effect. Saying 'for beauty or against' presumes that you know and that those people know, what is good vs. bad beauty/virtue/etc. However, I think the core problem is that they do not have the poetic way of informing the world and therefore, cannot tell what is beauty vs what is good beauty vs what is ugly. This is a common problem of inherent judgement, when we haven't formed people to know good from bad, virtue from banal from vice. I would argue that to 'inform' is a type of formation, which is what we ignore, because individuals either don't need this (and when does that begin? What age?) or do it themselves (because they have to). Trying to be an individual is therefore a lost cause.

Was the rise of feminism perhaps predictable? Partly due to men having two supreme concerns in regard to relations with women. What men want most is to: 1. Keep the peace with women (especially in the home) 2. Get laid/keep getting laid These top two priorities inform men’s choices. They are very influential in men’s decisions as men tend to favor whatever choice advances and protects those two priorities. In short, what women want, women get (generally speaking). So if women become enamored with feminist ideology and its associated demands, it’s only a matter of time before men fold. Because they want their peace. And they want to get laid.
